HVAC Rebates and Tax Credits in Missouri: What to Check

HVAC rebates in Missouri depend on who sends your utility bill, because there is no statewide program and the federal credit is gone. As of late 2026, the money that remains comes from individual utilities, each for its own customers only. Inside Hermann, that often means neither Ameren nor Spire. Check in the order below before you buy.

Step 1: Read the name on your utility bill

Your bill answers more than any rebate website can. Many articles list Ameren and Spire programs as if they cover the whole state. They do not. Each program pays only that company's own customers, so find your row here first.

Step 2: Rule out the money that is gone

Clear away the old advice before you budget, because plenty of older pages still promise it.

  • Federal 25C credit: ended. It applied to property placed in service through December 31, 2025. No federal HVAC credit applies to a 2026 install, so check with your tax adviser if a contractor says otherwise.
  • Ameren's Heating and Cooling Rebate Program: ended on December 31, 2024.
  • Missouri state tax credit or statewide heat pump rebate: none, according to Home Energy Basics.

A 2026 installation no longer earns the federal credit, so ask your tax adviser before counting on one.

Federal Home Energy Rebates, known as HOMES and HEAR, are a separate story. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has worked toward running them, but Home Energy Basics' September 2026 update reports no launch date in its sources. Treat them as unconfirmed and check with the department before you plan around them.

Step 3: HVAC rebates in Missouri by utility

Now look at your own utility, and pull its current chart. Every amount below is a past figure offered for scale, not a promise.

Ameren Missouri customers

Ameren's page says rebates come through a participating contractor, and its FastTrack PAYS program is for Ameren customers. Its 2025 PAYS chart listed $2,000 per system for an ENERGY STAR 15.2 or higher SEER2 air-source heat pump, and that chart was marked for 2025. Third-party 2026 guides conflict on the amount, so check Ameren's current chart. Ameren's heat pump guide also says switching from gas as your primary heat source does not qualify, so a gas-heat home must read this rule closely.

Spire customers

Spire's form for its October 2025 program listed $300 for a gas furnace at 96% AFUE or higher and $200 for 92% to 95.99%. The form covers a program year running October 1 to September 30, so it has already rolled over, and it warns that funding is limited. The home needs an active Spire account, and self-installs do not qualify, except for thermostats. Line up an enrolled contractor before any work begins, and keep the invoice.

Co-op members and propane homes

Home Energy Basics describes a Take Control and Save program coordinated through Associated Electric, paying per ton for some heat pumps, with insulation and sizing requirements. Your co-op sets the actual rules, so call before you buy. Propane homes off the gas main can still check their electric provider for heat pump programs.

Program rules usually name a minimum rating, so confirm the exact model before you sign.

Step 4: Look at income-based help

If household income is limited, ask about help that has nothing to do with a contractor's rebate. Missouri's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program includes the Energy Crisis Intervention Program, and the state's flyer says it may help with replacing or repairing a furnace or central air. Funding and limits change, and local agencies take applications. Your community action agency can also tell you about weatherization.

What is a rebate worth against the whole job?

Put the number next to the total before it changes your decision. Using the past figures above and St. Louis planning ranges, not our prices:

ExamplePast incentivePublished project rangeShare of the job
Ameren air-source heat pump$2,000$6,500 to $14,000 for a systemAbout 14% to 31%
Spire 96% AFUE gas furnace$300$3,200 to $6,200 installedAbout 5% to 9%
Spire 92% to 95.99% gas furnace$200$3,200 to $6,200 installedAbout 3% to 6%

A heat pump incentive can change the choice. A furnace rebate rarely does, so treat that one as a small bonus and not a reason to move up a model.

How does on-bill or financed help differ from a rebate?

A rebate is money back. An on-bill program or a loan is money you still repay, so read it as debt, even when the monthly number looks small.

Ameren's FastTrack PAYS name refers to paying through the utility bill. Ask what the monthly charge is, how long it runs and what happens if you sell the house or move out. Spire lists EnergyWise Financing of up to $15,000 on new natural gas equipment, with the same enrolled-contractor rule as its rebates. Compare the rate and term with a plain bank loan before you pick.

Paperwork decides most of these. Keep the invoice, the date of install and the model numbers for both halves of a split system, since a program may check the matched pair and not just the outdoor unit. The AHRI certificate number for that pairing is the usual proof of its rated efficiency, so ask for it at the quote stage, before any equipment gets ordered.

Five questions to ask before you sign

Do this before the deposit, because most rebates can be lost at this stage.

  1. Which program am I applying to, and am I an eligible customer?
  2. Is that year's chart in writing, with the amount and the date it ends?
  3. Does the exact model qualify? Federal minimums are 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2 for heat pumps, and programs usually ask for more.
  4. Must the contractor be enrolled before work starts, and can you show me that?
  5. Who files the paperwork, and by when?

What we tell customers about chasing rebates

Never let a rebate pick your equipment. The right heat pump or furnace comes from a Manual J load calculation and your fuel situation, and a few hundred dollars should not change that. Our heat pump installation page covers sizing, and furnace replacement covers gas and propane choices. Ask any contractor, us included, to confirm program enrollment in writing before you rely on it, since we do not claim enrollment here.

We also do not assume which utility serves a given address. That goes for homes around Belle, which sits in Maries County about 49 minutes and 42 miles from our Hermann office. That is a real drive, so call (209) 563-1270 first to confirm scheduling, and have your bill in hand so we can talk through the right questions together.

Good to know

Common questions

Does Hermann have its own HVAC rebate?

We could not confirm one. Inside city limits, gas and electric are municipal, so ask Hermann Municipal Utilities directly whether any incentive exists this year and get the answer in writing. Do not build a budget around an Ameren or Spire figure, because those programs are for customers of those companies, and a Hermann city bill says otherwise.

Can I still claim the 25C credit for a system bought in 2025?

The test is when the system was placed in service, not when you paid. Baker Donelson's summary of the 2025 federal law says the credit phased out for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. If your installation finished in 2025 or crossed into 2026, take the dates and paperwork to your tax adviser, who can apply them.

Do rebates apply if I replace a gas furnace with a heat pump?

Read the fine print, because this is where plans go wrong. Ameren's heat pump guide says switching from gas as the primary heat source does not qualify for a rebate. Home Energy Basics reports that homes with gas heat can keep gas as backup and still get the Ameren amount. Confirm your case with Ameren before you buy.

Calling is fastest

Prefer to write it down?

Calling gets you an answer sooner, especially if the house is cold or hot right now. If it can wait, send the details and our office will get back to you during business hours.
