Heat Pump Installation in Hermann, MO
The right setup for heat pump installation in Hermann depends on three things you already know: what fuel you have, what shape your ductwork is in and how cold your house gets in January. We run a Manual J load calculation, match the backup heat to the home and put the whole job in a clear, upfront quote.

Heat pump setups that fit Hermann-area homes
Pick the backup first, because it decides your winter bill more than the outdoor unit does. Four arrangements cover most homes in this area.
| Setup | Fits best | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| All-electric with strip heat | Homes with no gas or propane | Simple, but strip heat is costly on hard nights |
| Dual fuel with a propane or gas furnace | Farms and homes already on a tank or gas line | Two systems to maintain, lowest risk on the coldest nights |
| Cold climate heat pump | All-electric homes wanting less strip heat | Higher price, check the rated output at low temperatures |
| Ductless heat pump | Additions and historic homes without ducts | Zoned by room, not a whole-house duct system |
If you are weighing a heat pump replacement against a new furnace, our Missouri heat pump versus furnace comparison goes through the running costs.

How do we size a cold climate heat pump?
We size from a Manual J load calculation, never from the tonnage on the old data plate. ACCA Manual J sets the heating and cooling load, and Manual S picks equipment to match, allowing up to 15% extra cooling capacity. Past that, the unit short cycles in summer and leaves the house clammy, which is a real problem in the river valley.
Then we look at the heating side. DOE's training material says the balance point is the outdoor temperature where the heat pump can no longer meet the house's load. It comes from the load line and the manufacturer's extended performance data, and it decides how much backup you will use. Two houses with the same square footage can land far apart. A 1950s brick house and a 1985 ranch lose heat at very different rates.

Ducts come last and matter just as much. Manual D sizing tells us whether your existing runs can move the air a heat pump needs.
Dual fuel on propane farms: where the changeover belongs
A dual-fuel system runs the heat pump through most of the season and hands off to the furnace when it gets cold. That suits rural properties, because the propane tank is already there and you stop burning it on mild days. DOE describes two control methods:
- Balance point. The controls switch over at a set outdoor temperature, between 5°F and 35°F depending on the system. Only one source runs at a time.
- Droop. The furnace setpoint sits 3°F below the heat pump's. Both can run together when the heat pump falls behind.

The right setting also depends on price. When propane climbs, you may want the heat pump carrying more of the winter, so bring a recent propane bill and an electric bill to the conversation.

Heat pump installation in Hermann, step by step
Your quote names every item below, so you can compare it against any other bid line by line.
- We walk the house, measure it and run the load calculation.
- We check the ducts, electrical panel and any existing furnace.
- We confirm who pulls the mechanical permit where one is required.
- We recover old refrigerant and remove the old equipment.
- We set the outdoor unit on a pad or stand, clear of roof water.
- We install the indoor coil, line set, disconnect and condensate drain.
- We pressure test, evacuate and charge to the manufacturer's specification.
- We program the thermostat and backup heat, then test heat, cooling and defrost.
- We show you the settings, the filter and the paperwork to keep.
A like-for-like swap is far quicker than a job adding ductwork or a new circuit, and we will give you the expected timing in the quote.

What does a heat pump cost, and which rebates are real?
For St. Louis, HVAC Project Cost lists a 3-ton system at $7,800 to $13,500 installed (July 2026). Treat that as a regional planning range, not our price. Duct changes, panel work, a stand and the backup heat type all move it. Ask us for a clear, upfront quote.
Heat pump rebates depend on who sends your bill:
| Your bill says | What to check |
|---|---|
| City of Hermann | Municipal utility. Do not assume Ameren or Spire programs apply. Ask the city. |
| Ameren Missouri | FastTrack PAYS, for Ameren customers only, with a participating contractor required. The 2025 chart showed $2,000 for an ENERGY STAR 15.2+ SEER2 system. Check the current chart. |
| Rural electric co-op | Home Energy Basics reports per-ton dual-fuel incentives that vary by co-op. Call yours. |
Confirm any contractor's participation on Ameren's own list before work starts, ours included. The federal 25C credit has ended, and Missouri offers no statewide rebate.
Permits, refrigerant and the federal rules
As of late 2026, the state of Missouri does not license HVAC contractors, which leaves licensing and permits to each city and county. Expect a mechanical permit even on a straight swap, since the Missouri HVAC Authority says most jurisdictions require one. Call the city or county, then get the name of whoever will pull it written into your quote.
Federal minimums for new heat pumps are 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2. New residential equipment has moved to A2L refrigerant, R-454B or R-32. The Hermann Historic District has 360 contributing buildings, and we could not confirm whether outdoor units there get reviewed, so check with the city first.
Why Brian Grannemann Services for a heat pump install
- Electrical and plumbing are on our Google profile alongside heating and cooling, so the new circuit, the disconnect and the condensate drain do not need a second trade.
- New construction is part of our work too, which helps when a heat pump goes into a house before the ducts are closed in.
- We opened in Hermann in 1998, and you are welcome to bring your bills and questions to 124 E 10th St.
- Weber S. calls us "fair and responsive," and says we have worked for him about half a dozen times.
Looking after a new heat pump
Change filters on schedule, keep the outdoor unit clear and let it defrost without interference. Keep the thermostat steady, because a DOE-hosted guide says setbacks only pay off for absences over a day. Have the system checked yearly, and call for heat pump repair if aux heat stays on in mild weather.

Call (209) 563-1270 to book a load calculation. We quote installs across the region from Hermann, including Marthasville, Washington, Union and Belle. Those last two are about an hour from our office, so call first to confirm scheduling.

What customers say on Google
4.7 on Google(15 reviews)“During one of the coldest days in decades, and with fresh snow falling, Brian came out to our house this evening to repair our faulty furnace so we would have heat. He didn't hesitate to make the trip out. Cannot express how much we appreciate his efforts and care. I highly recommend his company for your HVAC needs. Thank you!”
“Hot water heater went out and Brian worked with us to help us find the correct replacement parts, and the repair process. He is knowledgeable, reliable and very responsive. He came out saw that we needed one more possible part and said he wouldn’t charge us labor until the water heater was up and running. We got the right parts he came out to install and had us up and running! We will definitely rely on him again for any future issues with HVAC, water heater, and or plumbing issues! It’s so nice to have hot water again!”
“I can’t say enough good about Brian and his company. They are my go to guy’s. I’ve had them work for me about a half dozen times now. No need to look elsewhere. They are fair and responsive to your needs.”

Heat Pump Installation questions
Will a heat pump keep up with a Missouri January?
Yes, with the right backup behind it. Standard units lose efficiency below about 35°F, according to DOE's contractor guide, so you need strip heat, a furnace or a cold climate model for the hard nights. With Hermann's winter lows averaging near 24°F, we size the heat pump for your load and pick the backup before choosing equipment.
Can a heat pump use my existing ductwork?
Often, but it has to be checked. A heat pump needs steady airflow, and it delivers milder air than a furnace, so undersized or leaky ducts show up quickly as weak rooms. In homes from the 1970s and 1980s, which are common in ZIP 65041, we measure static pressure first. Where ducts fall short, we quote duct repair alongside the equipment.
Do I need to replace my propane furnace to add a heat pump?
Not always. If the furnace is in good shape and its blower can handle the added coil, a heat pump can be paired with it as a dual-fuel system. We check the furnace age, cabinet size and blower capacity first. A furnace near the end of its 15 to 20 years is usually better replaced at the same time.
Is there a federal tax credit for a heat pump in 2026?
No. The 25C credit stopped at the end of 2025, and nothing replaced it for a 2026 install. Be wary of any quote still built around one, and run your own situation past a tax adviser. Home Energy Basics also reports no Missouri state credit and no statewide rebate.
Does Hermann Municipal Utilities have a heat pump rebate?
We could not confirm one, so ask the utility directly at 207 Schiller Street before you budget for it. Homes inside Hermann city limits buy power from the city, so an Ameren or Spire offer may not reach you. Read your own bill first: the name at the top decides which programs you can use.
How long will a new heat pump last?
Plan on about 15 years, the typical figure in a DOE-hosted homeowner guide, though climate, use and upkeep all change it. Our winters work the outdoor unit hard, and it runs in both seasons, unlike a furnace. Regular filter changes, a clear coil and a yearly check all help. Keep the install paperwork, because manufacturer warranty coverage often depends on registration.
