Emergency Furnace Repair in Hermann, MO
Emergency furnace repair in Hermann starts with ruling out danger. If you smell gas or a CO alarm sounds, leave the house and call 911 from outside. If the house is only cold, run the checks below, protect your pipes and call us. A no-heat night in freeze season does not fix itself.

When is a furnace problem a real emergency?
A furnace problem is an emergency when it threatens people or the house. Sort yours with this table, and if two rows fit, follow the more serious one.
| What you notice | How serious | First move |
|---|---|---|
| Gas smell, rotten-egg odor or hissing | Emergency | Leave now. Call 911 and your gas utility from outside |
| CO alarm sounding, or headache and nausea indoors | Emergency | Everyone outside, then call 911 |
| Smoke, or a burning smell that keeps getting stronger | Emergency | Leave and call 911 |
| No heat and freezing outside | Urgent | Run the checks, protect the pipes, call us |
| No heat with a baby, an older adult or someone ill at home | Urgent | Move them somewhere warm, then call |
| Cold air from the vents on a mild day | Can wait | Check the filter and thermostat, call in office hours |
Hermann gets about 116 freezing nights a year (BestPlaces), and the winter average low sits near 24°F. Older houses here, with pipes along outside walls and in crawl spaces, have the least margin.

Our office is open Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM. Call and we will sort out the next step.
What to do right now if you smell gas or a CO alarm sounds
Get everyone out first, and do everything else from outside. These steps cover a suspected leak, and the CO steps come after them.
- Leave the house now and take everyone with you.
- Touch nothing on the way out. The Missouri Public Service Commission says not to light a match, work a switch, use a phone nearby or start a car in an attached garage, because any of those can make a spark.
- Go to a neighbor's house or well down the street, then call 911 and your gas utility.
- Stay out until responders clear the house. NFPA says not to light the appliance if you smell gas.
On propane, the Propane Education and Research Council says to close the tank valve only if it is safe, then call your supplier from away from the house. We would call 911 as well. If a tank runs dry, its guide says never to turn the gas on yourself, because a qualified professional must leak-check the system first.
Carbon monoxide has no smell, so the alarm may be your only warning. CPSC and NFPA say to get outside immediately and call 911 from fresh air. CPSC lists headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, sleepiness and confusion as symptoms. NFPA says to stay out until emergency personnel say it is safe, and the furnace stays off until someone finds the source.

No heat and no warning signs: what do you check first?
Four checks take about five minutes, and none of them involve the gas side of the furnace.
- Thermostat. Set it to heat, above room temperature. Replace the batteries if the display is blank.
- Power. Check the furnace service switch and the breaker. Reset a tripped breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off.
- Filter. Change a clogged filter, because restricted airflow can shut a furnace down on its limit switch.
- Fuel and vents. Read the propane gauge. Brush snow away from PVC vent pipes on the side wall.
Stop there. Burners, gas valves and igniters belong to a technician.

How to protect pipes until the heat is back
National Weather Service guidance covers the basics, and the Red Cross agrees on the first two.
- Trickle water at faucets on outside walls. Moving water is slower to freeze.
- Open the cabinet doors under sinks so room air reaches the plumbing.
- Learn where the main water shutoff is before you need it.
- Never thaw a pipe with a torch or open flame. Use a hair dryer.
- Check for leaks after a thaw. University of Missouri Extension warns that pipes frozen for hours may crack and leak once the ice melts.

How to stay warm without a second emergency
Gather everyone in one room and close the doors to the rest of the house. An electric space heater is fine with three feet of clearance, and NFPA says to turn it off when you leave the room or go to bed.

If the house keeps dropping, go to family, a neighbor or a warming center. Missouri's health department says to call 211 to find one.
How we respond when the furnace is out at night
Call (209) 563-1270 whenever it happens. The office is open 8 AM to 4 PM, Monday to Friday, and shut on weekends, which means we cannot promise a response time or a night or weekend visit. Tell us what is happening and ask what is possible.
Here is what customers have reported. In a review about seven years old, Jo M. wrote that "Brian came out to our house this evening to repair our faulty furnace," on one of the coldest days in decades. Misty R. wrote of a water heater that failed on the coldest day and a new one installed the next morning. Treat those as examples, not a commitment.
If you cannot reach us and the house is getting dangerously cold, do not wait on us. Move people somewhere warm and call another contractor. These details speed up any call:
- Your address, your road and your fuel: city gas, propane or electric
- What the furnace did before it stopped
- A photo of the data plate, so the model and age are known
- Whether anyone at home is vulnerable to the cold
What happens when a technician reaches the furnace
Safety comes first, then the diagnosis, then your decision. What is included:
- A check for gas odor and venting problems before any restart
- A tested diagnosis of the failed part
- A clear quote before repair work starts
- A full heating cycle after the repair
The visit runs in this order:
- We confirm the symptom with you and read any fault code at the board.
- We check the filter, thermostat signal, power and venting.
- We test the ignition sequence: inducer, pressure switch, igniter, gas valve and flame sensor.
- We inspect the burners and heat exchanger area if the fault points there.
- We explain what failed and quote it before starting.
- We repair it, run a full cycle and confirm the house is gaining heat.

If a furnace is not safe to run, we will say so and leave it off. If the part is not on hand, we will tell you that too, and talk through keeping the house warm in the meantime. Once the crisis has passed, price a furnace replacement before approving a major repair on an aging unit.
What does emergency furnace repair in Hermann cost after hours?
Ask about after-hours pricing when you call, before anyone drives out. We do not publish a rate. Four things move the bill: the part, the time needed to find the fault, the drive from Hermann and the hour.
Angi's 2026 St. Louis figures put the average furnace repair at $238, with most jobs from $113 to $364 and labor running $125 to $150 an hour. Those are regional numbers, not our prices, and they say nothing about after-hours rates.
Why Brian Grannemann Services for a furnace emergency?
- Local since 1998. We work from a staffed office at 124 E 10th St in Hermann, so you are dealing with a local company.
- A reviewed cold-weather record. Jo M. wrote that Brian "didn't hesitate to make the trip out" in fresh snow.
- Care around safety. Donna M. described the work as very thorough and safety-minded, which matters most on gas equipment.
- More than one trade. Our Google profile lists heating, electrical and plumbing, which helps when a no-heat night also leaves a split pipe.
How far we travel for a no-heat call
We work out of Hermann, and distance matters on a cold night, so tell us your road. Rhineland is about 9 minutes away and Berger about 14. Morrison is about 22 minutes, while Owensville is about 33, and icy roads add to all of those. For everyday no-heat problems, see our furnace repair page, and book a fall furnace tune-up before the first hard freeze.

Emergency Furnace Repair questions
Should I shut off my furnace if I smell gas?
No. Leave it alone and leave the house. Going to the thermostat or the switch keeps you inside longer, and the Missouri Public Service Commission warns that operating a switch can make a spark. Call 911 and your gas utility from outside, then call us once responders say the house is safe.
How cold does it have to get before my pipes are at risk?
Texas A&M AgriLife puts the risk at 20°F or below outside, though exposed pipes can go sooner. Hermann's winter average low is about 24°F, so an ordinary cold snap crosses that line. With no heat, start the faucet trickle and open the cabinets while the house is still warm.
Will you come out for no heat at night or on a weekend?
We cannot promise that, so call and ask. The office keeps weekday hours, 8 AM to 4 PM, Monday to Friday. Jo M. reported an evening furnace repair in bitter cold, which tells you what happened that night, not what will happen on yours.
Is it safe to keep pressing the furnace reset button?
No. Press it once at most, and only with no gas smell in the house. A furnace that locks out again has a safety control reporting a fault, such as a dirty flame sensor or a blocked vent. Leave it off and tell us what it did before it stopped.
Can I heat the house with the oven or a generator?
Not with the oven. NFPA says never use it for heat, and Missouri's health department adds gas stoves, kerosene heaters and charcoal grills to that list. CPSC says a portable generator stays outdoors, at least 20 feet from the home. An electric space heater with three feet of clearance is the safer bridge.
I rent my home in Hermann. Who do I call when the furnace quits?
Gas smell or CO alarm: 911 first, your landlord after. For plain no heat, call your landlord or property manager, because they usually approve and pay for the repair. Then call us with their permission. About a third of Hermann housing units are rented (BiggestUSCities), so check your lease for who handles this.
